A retired Deputy Director of the NYSC, Mr. Joseph Apaleokha Abu has disclosed that the noble Scheme is building the graduate youths into becoming indispensable tool in nation-building.
The retired Deputy Director made the disclosure when he delivered the motivational lecture to 2023 Batch 'C' (Stream 1) corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Ikare-Akoko.
Abu, a graduate of Biochemistry from the University of Benin who did his mandatory one year national service at Lisabi Grammar School, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta in Ogun State between July 1979 and June 1980 admonished the corps members to be diligent in the performance of assigned duties.
"Distinguished Gentlemen corps members, for you to fit in into the responsibility as nation-builders, you need to develop a sound mentality about commitment and diligence, as this will propel you to the greater heights you are yearning for. To achieve your personal dream, you must flee from fraudulent practices, impersonation and internet cybercrimes".
The erstwhile State Coordinator in Kebbi and Anambra states charged members of the service corps to participate actively in all camp activities and obey constituted authority throughout the service year as this will help them navigate successfully the mandatory one year service to the fatherland.
The Edo State born devout Catholic who worked in Edo, Nasarawa, Sokoto, FCT among other NYSC formations appealed to the corps members to shun anti-social behaviours that are capable of truncating their life journeys but rather focus on the core values of the Scheme vis-a-vis patriotism, integrity, efficiency, commitment and team work which he believed will propel them to enviable heights.
"A successful service year depends on the good application of the core values of the Scheme. Interpersonal relationship with general public such as employer, colleagues, supervisors and subordinates will assist you in achieving your potentials during the service year. You may not know it but people are daily monitoring your activities as this will form the basis to rate your performance at the end of the service year".
He enjoined them to personally and collectively work towards improving their host communities by executing projects that have immediate impact on the society.
"NYSC is such a complete package designed in a way to give you what you want if you are serious about leaving a legacy. Your predecessors identified the felt needs in their various places of primary assignment or host communities and mobilised funds through citizens and residents to fix the challenge. You can sustain their legacy or improve on what you will meet on ground. Service to the people is making an impact on their lives" he said.
The former Ag. Head, ICT who retired from active service in 2014 noted that times have changed when a good class of degree can easily fetch one a good job. He advised members of the service corps to embrace the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme while in camp and perfect their skills during the post-camp training.
"Today, most youths of working class are doing jobs they learnt after their university education that are not related to their course of studies. In view of this, I strongly advise that you pick a skill of your interest from the many provided in SAED programme for your personal development during the orientation and a follow-up during primary assignment".
The erstwhile Head, South East Area Office (SEAO) urged the corps participants to be good ambassadors of their families and NYSC Scheme during their service year.
"Be friendly with all and sundry, try to forgive your offenders as soon as possible and avoid all forms of shady deals that may implicate you 'when caught as there is no secret in the world'. I wish you a very successful orientation course, adequate arrangement at your places of primary assignment, successful Community Development Service (CDS) and meritorious passing-out as and when due in Jesus mighty name" he concluded.
The State Coordinator, Mrs. Victoria Nnenna Ani in her opening remarks extolled the meticulous attribute of the retired Deputy Director which she said will lift the spirit of the corps members during the delivery of the motivational lecture.
The State Coordinator charged the corps members to avail themselves of the brilliant submission of the guest speaker, being one of the cerebral administrators the Scheme has ever produced.
Mrs. Ani implored the corps members to see the lecture as a practical experience of someone who knows the Scheme inside out and is ever ready and willing to share the knowledge gathered over the years with young and vibrant youths.
