WACP demands sustainable funding, tech-driven training for health system

By Chidinma Ewunonu-Aluko, Ibadan   The West African College of Physicians(WACP) Nigeria Chapter,  on Saturday called for sustainable health financing and smart technology in medical training. This is contained in a communiqué from its 50th Annual and General Scientific Meeting (AGSM) in Ibadan. The communique was signed by the WACP Nigeria Chairman, Dr Benjamin Uzochukwu and National Secretary, Dr Sunday Malomo. The meeting, held from July 5 to July 11, had the theme “Building Bridges, Forging Resilience and Partnership in Health” and a total of 434 doctors registered for the event. The College urged the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and State Health Insurance Agencies to ensure full and timely disbursement of the Basic Health Care Provision Fund(BHCPF). Prominent traditional rulers from across Yorubaland have confirmed their participation in the symposium commemorating the 140th Anniversary of the Historic Kiriji Peace Treaty, further strengthening royal support for the landmark celebration . The symposium is scheduled to hold on Monday, 21 September 2026, at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Among the confirmed royal fathers are Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, the Soun of Ogbomosho; HRM Oba (Engr.) Kidnapped Oyo Pupils, Teachers Regain Freedom

The pupils and teachers abducted by suspected gunmen in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom after spending more than 50 days in captivity . Their release was announced on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, in a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account. "Finally, the kidnapped pupils and teachers in Orire, Oyo, have been freed by their abductors," Onanuga stated. Although the circumstances surrounding their release were yet to be disclosed as of the time of filing this report, the development has brought relief to the victims' families, residents and other Nigerians who had followed the incident with concern. By Gabriel Sunday Afolayan The President of Unique Ladies Club, Igogo-Ekiti, Mrs. Funmi Awoyemi-Fagbemi, has unveiled plans to make welfare of widows and other under-privileged individuals a prime factor in the club's agenda by promoting humanitarian service, youths engagement and cultural preservation among the vulnerable in the community. Mrs. Awoyemi-Fagbemi, who is a certified accountant with Lagos State government, said the club would use the 2026 annual Igogo Ekiti day celebration as a platform to strengthen unity, honour outstanding sons and daughters of Igogo-Ekiti, encourage charity and support initiatives that improve the people's welfare. Peoples Democratic Party  (PDP) governorship candidate in Ogun State, Oladipupo Adebutu, on Wednesday, received a hero’s welcome, when thousands of Yewa indigenes, Ogun West senatorial district, trooped out to receive and endorse his 2027 bid.
