As the 2023 World’s Mental health day was being celebrated across the globe today, Youths in Ondo state have been urged not to be involved in taking hard drugs that can endanger their mental fitness and consequently jeopardise their future.
President of the Rotary Club Akure Prestige, Rotarian Omolola Fadumiye gave this charge at an outreach programme to mark the World Mental health day, with the theme, “Mental health is a universal right”, held at Olusegun Agagu University of Science and technology, Okitipupa, Ondo State Nigeria.
The event which was hosted by Rotary District 9125, was jointly coordinated by Rotary club of Akure Metro, Rotary club of Akure Prestige, Rotary club of Ondo – Adeyemi college, and Rotary club Abuja Municipal.
In collaboration with Carry My Cross, founded by Barrister Rotimi Ogunsanmi, a non-governmental organisation that’s focused on mental health outreaches, Rotary Clubs took the mental health day’s sensitization programme to drivers and market women in Okitipupa.
Fadumiye, who spoke on behalf of other Presidents, noted that the essence of the outreach was to create awareness against suicide, drug abuse, the use of illicit substances and to create hope for the world in order to make it a better place to coexist.
“This is Rotary international, the world best service organization and it is one of the service days of Rotary; today, we are celebrating the International day for mental health and wellness”. She asserted.
Also speaking at the event, an official of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Mr. Stewart while highlighting the importance of creating awareness on mental health, hinted that drug abused was a societal problem that needed to be discouraged at all cost.
“Today a lot of people are abusing one substance or the other and is becoming a problem in our society. We are here to talk about drug abuse, and to celebrate mental health day.
"We are looking at something that can cause suicide in our society and which can be traced to illicit drug and substance abuse.
“Due to the abuse of drug which has affected the mental health of some individuals, suicide thought will definitely set in and that is not good enough.
“Therefore, we are here to encourage you all to say no to drug abuse, don’t commit suicide and always seek help, if need be.”
In attendance are Rotarian Olaitan Taiwo Abiola, President, RC Ondo Adeyemi college Prestige, Rotarian Chris Uchendu, President RC Abuja Municipal, and Rotarian Oluwasegunota Bolarinwa President RC AKURE metro amongst others.
