As part of assiduous effort to prevent incessant flooding and boat capsizing,
The Ondo State Government has begun waterway maintenance with the clearing of water hyacinth that blocked rivers in Ondo South Senatorial District
The Hope had earlier reported that there was a downpour that caused flooding in the areas including Okitipupa, Igbokoda, Ese Odo, and others, which destroyed several properties.
The overgrown water hyacinth on the waterways usually hinders the smooth movement of boat and in extreme cases, it causes accident.
The Special Adviser on Transport to Ondo State Governor, Tobi Ogunleye while appreciating the Governor for approving the exercise states that the administration shall continue to do all within its power to ensure the safety of life and properties within the state.
According to Ogunleye, it a preventive measures against recurrence of any disaster attributed to the hyacinth in the areas.
He disclosed that the state government has approved free boat shuttle for students in the riverine area of the state to cushion the effect of oil subsidy removal in the country.
While commending the state Ministry of Transport for a job well done, Director, Inland Waterways Engr. Dr. Pius Omoge said the need for clearing the waterways of weeds and overgrowth is a proactive measure taken by the state to prevent boat mishaps that might lead to loss of life or properties or both.
Some residents of the area who spoke with our correspondent expressed their joy and appreciates the Governor for this gesture, and pray to God to grant the Governor speedy recovery and sound health to be able to continue the good works he is doing in the state.
Some of the areas cleared includes: Ita Oluwa/ Igbotu, Ebute Okitipupa / Ilu Abo, Agbabu /Sheba among others.
