The NYSC Ondo State Coordinator, Mrs. Victoria Nnenna Ani has disclosed that the strength the nation derives from the outstanding exploits and feats achieved globally could be attributed to her heterogeneous cultures.
The State Coordinator made the disclosure during the Cultural Carnival which is the peak of social activities for the 2022 Batch 'B' (Stream II) orientation course.
Ani, who holds the traditional title of Lolo Odibeze from Enugu State charged the corps members to take advantage of diverse cultures in the country to promote cultural values that the country hold sacrosanct.
"Nigeria is culturally blessed and we need to harness these cultures and give them necessary and required exposure so that they don't go into extinction. This informs the national policy on culture in which states are encouraged to promote cultural awareness campaign at the grassroots".
"The campaign has paid off as many states have dedicated a day within a week where indigenous culture is promoted through dress code. You can complement this noble initiative by using your information technology dexterity via social media platforms to market the various cultures to the outside world".
She said the members of service corps should volunteer to be cultural ambassadors at their respective places of primary assignment and host communities as people will want to associate with them because the value the society placed on them.
"You can change the world and bring the much desired peace to every nooks and crannies of our society if you start the work of redemption with the younger ones who see you as mentors and role models. Organise indigenous cultural competition and catch them young and let them know that the cultures they are exposed to are not superior to their own".
"I am using this platform to call on well-meaning Nigerians and philanthropists in the society as well as parents to let us go back to our root and re-ignite the processes that our forebears introduced which made our cultures the envy of other nations".
The State Coordinator advised that indigenous languages which have been relegated to the background and foreign languages promoted should be made compulsory as part of teaching aid in order to strengthen the cultures of the land.
"NYSC is the largest assemblage of graduate youths from diverse cultures and the Scheme is noted for sustaining promotion of national unity and development. Promote Nigerian cultures wherever you find yourselves and the country will return back to the good old days" she advised.
Various cultures, both nationally and locally were showcased to the admiration of all and sundry.
The number 8 platoon with Owo Kingdom cultural presentation came first with 81 points and edged number 4 platoon which showcased Hausa culture and garnered 80 points to the second position.
The third position went to number 2 platoon which amassed 74 points with their Ondo Kingdom presentation.
The Carnival cake was cut by the Principal Camp Officials and the representatives of all the platoons.
