The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Major General Shuaibu Ibrahim, has said that the NYSC Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme has been carefully designed to equip corps members for self-employment and wealth creation.
Ibrahim who stated this in his address at the Terminal Parade and Closing ceremony of the 2022 Batch 'A' (stream 1) orientation course at the NYSC permanent, Orientation camp Iseyin Oyo State, urged the corps members to avail themselves the opportunity of post-camp training to improve upon the Skills set acquired while on camp.
The Director-General, who was represented by the Oyo State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs Grace Ogbuogebe said that the SAED programme informed the advocacy for the establishment of the National Youth Service Corps Trust fund adding that once it becomes operational, the quality of the programme will be enhanced as trainees with bankable business proposals will be supported with start-up grants and vocational training. Thus stemming the tide of restiveness, tendency for criminality and unemployment.
He thereafter, appreciated the National Assembly and other stakeholders for the progress made in the bill to establish the NYSC Trust Fund.
"I consider it appropriate to use this opportunity to thank the House of Representatives and by extension, the entire National Assembly for the progress made so far on the legislative processes on the Bill for the establishment of the Trust fund which has not only passed through the second reading but also subjected to a public hearing", he said.
Ibrahim stressed the need for corps members to be diligent in the performance of their duties at Places of Primary Assignment and integrate into their host communities through learning the language and culture of the host communities.
The NYSC helmsman assured the corps members that their welfare and security are the topmost priority of the Scheme and there is a sustained liaison with securitv agencies and other stakeholders with the view of ensuring their safety but they are to play their part by being security conscious all the time.
The NYSC boss equally enjoined the corps members to be good ambassadors of the NYSC and their families and strongly advised them to shun social vices and use social media for positive purposes.
He charged the corps members to help in sensitizing members of their host communities about the need to continue to observe the COVID19 protocols.
Earlier in a virtual meeting with corps members and camp officials at Iseyin Camp, the Director General in his debrief, charged the corps to desist from embarking on unauthorized journeys, acts that is detrimental to the image of the Scheme and inappropriate use of the social media while urging them to quickly settle down at their Place of Primary Assignment.
