Ondo: Court jails woman for brutalising house help

A Magistrate court sitting in Akure on Monday has sentenced a 36-year-old woman, Mrs Opeyemi Omoyemi to four and half years in prison

This follows an alleged brutality on a 12 year old boy, Joel Sunday living with her as a house boy.

Omoyemi was arraigned before a Magistrate Court sitting on a five-count charge of attempted murder, child abuse, violence against persons prohibition among others.

The defendant was said to have used stick and razor blade to inflict multiple injuries on the body of the house help who she accused of stealing pieces of meat from her pot of soup.

Delivering her Judgement, Chief Magistrate Olufunmilayo Edwin sentenced the defendant to three and half years on the first count charge of grievous harm she inflicted on the victim in the viral video.

The defendant was also sentenced to one year imprisonment on count five.

The defendant at the last sitting had pleaded guilty to three of the charges leveled against her

Recalled that Mrs Omoyemi was recently arrested by the Ondo State Police command due to the alledged brutality.

Omoyemi alleged that the boy stole meat from the pot, hence the decision to punish him. She inflicted wounds on the boy through stick and razor blade.

Her action generated condemnation by Nigerians who called for an immediate prosecution of the woman, after watching the video of the boy dripping in blood.

The boy’s health is being managed at the Police clinic in Akure.

Before the Chief Magistrate delivered the judgement, counsel to the defendant, Foluso Kayode had asked the court to be lenient with his client.

He added that his client, is a first offender, stressing that she has not been arrested for any inhuman behaviour before now.

The magistrate also ruled that the defendant should appear in court in April 13 on count four bordering on human trafficking.
